How to Conquer Suicidal Thoughts

If you are reading this page, I have already been praying for you. Every day I pray for the people who will read this page who are in need of help and support.

Steps to Begin the Fight Against Suicidal Thoughts

Step #1:

Above all else, find a helpful and supportive person to talk to.

You are not alone and there is someone who can help you!  

Being isolated and not talking to anyone creates a dangerous setup for unhealthy thoughts to  grow. When we are alone, our thoughts tend to swirl around in a circle, allowing the negativity  to just keep building. This “thought cyclone” can create new negative thoughts and increase feelings of despair and loneliness.

 In contrast, talking to another person who wants to help can dispel these lies, give you hope and connect you with those who can help you find solutions.

 

Please reach out to someone who can help by calling or texting 988. 

 

You can text or say something like 

  • “This is really hard for me to say but I’m having painful thoughts and it might help to talk.” 
  • Or, “I’m struggling right now and just need to talk to someone — can we chat?”
  • or simply say, “I need help,” and they will take it from there. 
 

Please reach out to someone.

You do not have to be alone in this.

There are solutions to the problems you are facing. 

There are people that can help you; that want to help you.

Step #2:

After you have connected with a person to talk to, start identifying the thoughts you are thinking. Which thoughts are harmful lies? Identify the thoughts that are harming you and begin replacing them with truth. 

Do any of these thoughts come into your head? If so, fight these thoughts with truth!

  • “I hate myself.”
  • “I can’t do anything right.”  – Battle this by focusing on the things you have done right, no matter how small.

  • ” I can’t do anything right “- We all make mistakes. but we often only focus on the mistakes, and ignore what we have done right. We probably do 100 things right everyday, but human beings tend to focus only on what they did wrong. Look at your day. Did you wake up and go to work or school? Did you brush your teeth? Did you get yourself dressed? Take responsibility for something you did? Finish a homework assignment? Take a shower? Did you do your laundry, or take care of your kids by dressing and feeding them? Did you help anyone, or make them laugh? Listened to them? The truth is that you have done many things right in your life. Focus on these.
  • “Nobody loves me.” – This is an utterly false statement that many people believe. I don’t care who you are – somebody loves you! 
  • “I could fall off the face of the earth and not one would care.
    “This is never going to end.” 
  • “There aren’t any solutions to my problems.” 
  • “This pain is never going to end.”
