What defines suicidal thinking?

Every suicidal person has specific factors that influence them to attempt  suicide. All circumstances, perspectives and thought processes are uniquely specific to them. However, there are common contributors that lead to an individual taking their own life, and a main element that crosses almost all scenarios.

Wanting to die is not the same as being suicidal.  Many people can relate to the desire to escape life. However, at this level a person still understands that killing themselves is a horrific and unacceptable choice. They are able to pull from their personal strengths and/or have the ability to seek help to get through their difficult circumstances.

In contrast, a suicidal mind has an unconscious separation from reality and becomes disconnected from truths they would otherwise utilize to help themselves.  Their thinking switches from fighting their difficulties and pain, to a dangerous belief that suicide is the best option for them and their loved ones.

When this irrational state of mind becomes pervasive enough, they become motivated to find and implement a plan to take their own life.

This irrational* state of mind stems from individual pain that a person is suffering through; i.e. loneliness, self-hatred, death of a loved one, chronic illness, multiple losses (of any kind), depressive or mind-altering medication, etc. The pain can exist over a long period of time, or can occur very suddenly. External causes, such as medication (even anti-depressants), frequently affect people who would otherwise not be depressed or suicidal.

*The term “irrational” should not be confused with a mental health disorder or disability. Any person, with any level of abilities, can become suicidal under specific circumstances.

Examples of Irrational Thinking

T

  •  A lonely, isolated teenager who has extremely busy parents may  think, “I could disappear off the face of the earth and nobody would care.”
  •  A parent struggling with a drug addiction may think, “I’m such a burden to my family. I can’t do anything right. They would be better off I wasn’t here.”

These types of irrational thoughts, or thinking errors,  become prevalent in the mind of a hurting person and they are unable to see the error of their thinking. A lonely teenager  can’t see that their parents would be devastated and grieve for for the rest of their lives. An addict can’t see that, despite the hardship of their addiction, their death would leave pain and confusion far beyond their current struggles, and their death will pass their pain, desire to die, and suffering to their children and loved ones.

Most of all, suicidal blinds a person from hope.

But there’s more happening beneath the surface. These distorted thoughts don’t just come out of nowhere—they’re part of a much deeper battle.

At the root of suicidal thoughts lies a deeper, often overlooked source—a powerful and destructive force we must not ignore. That force is Satan.

Satan is just as real as the Lord God Almighty—the One who created you and loves you more than you can imagine.

The Bible not only tells us about God’s love and power; it also warns us about the Devil and his mission to destroy us. Both God and Satan are real—but they’re not equal. God is all-powerful. Satan is not.

But the Bible makes this truth clear: Satan is a real enemy who relentlessly tries to deceive, distract, and destroy us.

The Bible tells us:

  • Demons can harass people, whisper lies into their minds, tempt them, and torment them externally (2 Corinthians 12:7; Acts 5:16; John 8:44).

  • Satan and his demons are very real—just like God and Jesus are real—but they don’t have the same power. Their goal is to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10)

But remember this: through Jesus, we are not powerless. Satan may be real—but God is greater.

Life comes from God the Father. Death comes from Satan, the Father of Lies. The battle of suicide is one of life and death. Please choose life.
